It amazes me how they got Marlon Brando to do this movie. He is basically playing The Godfather one more time. Now if you haven't seen The Godfather then you probably won't quite understand the humor in all of this. Anyway I laughed throughout the whole thing and I loved it.

A nice comedic story that?s a perfect mental fit for Sunday afternoon with nothing to do. The movie core is strung together with a lot of clichés about Mafia, college and New York, but it is really interesting is how Brodrick, Brando and the rest of the cast unravel the clichés into something more heartfelt. Sure a lot of the exposition and humor is more point A to B, but a really enjoyed the Brodrick-Brando development and even Penelope Anne Miller, The lovely Tina, brings something to the party.

Starts out a bit slow, but ends with two killer comic sequences: the dinner jacket and the big game. As in all subsequent movies about college, Harold does not attend any classes. I think this is the first major piece of pop culture to center on college life, but there must have been a lot during the 20s since Harold Lloyd's character patterns himself on college movies.

There have been a lot of movies where stars have repeated the triumphs of their parts - but has any star ever done it more triumphantly than Marlon Brando does in "The Freshman"? He is doing a reprise here of his most popular character, Don Vito Corleone of "The Godfather," and he does it with such wit, discipline and seriousness that it's not a ripoff and it's not a cheap shot, it's a brilliant comic masterstroke.

When was the last time you were really surprised in a movie? These days, it seems, most movies are homogenized and safely predictable in order to appeal to the widest possible audience without disturbing anyone. Surprise! Here's "The Freshman," a quirky sleeper with something truly unexpected around every corner.
