Though initially compelling, Peter Nick's documentary is fundamentally without a clear perspective on its subject.

The strength, and fascination, of The Force is that the movie isn’t on anyone’s side. It’s cognizant of the brutality and violence that police officers, in our era, have been caught on phone cameras committing. At the same time, it’s not out to demonize the police — it’s out to capture the pressures they’re under, and to show us what their job looks like from the inside.

A documentary that is at once about a police department, a city and, by extension, a nation on the brink of dissolution.

This is fabulous documentary. The filmmakers take great pains to be as objective as possible - showing the horribly, criminally bad and most certainly good and honorable sides of the Oakland Police force.

Jason Gorber 14 Aug 2017

As a look at contemporary law enforcement reform, The Force is a precise and focussed work that surveys the much maligned Oakland Police department as it undergoes much needed reconstitution.
