The Flim-Flam Man (1967)

Mordecai Jones, a silver-tongued swindler and self-proclaimed "M.B.S., C.S., D.D.—Master of Back-Stabbing, Cork-Screwing and Double-Dealing," has made a career out of charming and cheating his way through life. Played with devilish charm by George C. Scott, Jones takes on a new protégé in Curley, a wide-eyed Army deserter eager for direction. Together, they crisscross the backroads of the rural South, pulling off a string of homespun cons while staying one step ahead of a relentless local sheriff. Along the way, Curley falls for Bonnie Lee Packard, a rebellious heiress who joins their misadventures. But as the scams grow riskier, Curley begins to wonder whether a life of flimflam is worth the price. With its colorful characters, offbeat humor, and standout performance by Scott, The Flim-Flam Man is a rollicking Southern caper about cons, conscience, and unlikely camaraderie.

One of my favorite movies; great acting by Scott who steals the show, though Curly and the Southern Belle he encounters make a good romance subplot story. The music is great,(once you hear the harmonica motif, you'll be humming it for days) the crazy chases they have from law (Meeshaw!) and all the con aritst scams Mortachai pulls are too much,. Watch it! And what do you know, it's directed by the legendary Irvin Kershner!

Rogues and scoundrels are not really lovable except in fiction, plays and movies, and then only in proportion to the quality of the work. I am happy to report that The Flim-Flam Man, all about a confidence man, has the necessary quality.

There are also some nicely directed scenes in which Scott gradually overcomes the suspicions of his victims... But, in the end, Scott doesn't quite come off as the flim-flam man.

Classic movie, very funny. Harry Morgan was great in this movie for the sheriff

A fun yarn about a old timey southern grifter and the kid he sucks into his world, doesn't get a lot better than George C. Scott, Harry Morgan and SLIM PICKINS!
