Somehow, director-screenwriter Bernar Hebert manages to keep you hooked into the story, even though Leo is not a sympathetic character.

Cohen's appeal to filmmakers is understandable, but Hébert needed to work harder to reshape his source material into a cinematic form.

This is a lovely adaptation of Leonard Cohen's semi autobiographical novel. Hebert has been able to capture Cohen's straight up but beautifully expressed language with subtle, tender touches. JR Bourne and Michele-Barbara Pelletier deliver even, engaging performances that help us take the journey leading to The Favourite Game.
