this film feels very sophisticated for 1928, but i know that part of that feeling comes from seeing it played back at the proper speed. the acting, while surreal, isn't herky-jerky or posed in the traditional silent way. i can see how welles was heavily influenced by this film when creating the vast interiors for citizen kane's xanadu. the editorial style is very effective, and haunting.

this movie really confused me. I could enjoy it, and appreciated the surrealism although I felt as though I missed something and perhaps I was not smart enough to get it.
