Suave amateur detective Tom Lawrence--aka Michael Arlen's literary hero The Falcon--arrives in Hollywood for some rest and relaxation, only to find himself involved in the murder of a movie actor. There's no shortage of suspects: the costume designer to whom he was married, a tyrannical director, a beautiful young French starlet, a Shakespeare-quoting producer, even a New York gangster. Helping The Falcon solve the crime is a cute, wise-cracking cab driver and a pair of bumbling cops.

The usual crime story to solve, but without having to build many or expensive new sets using RKO's own studios as the backdrop.

One of the best of RKOs Falcon pictures, helped by a particularly fast paced, witty script, great character performances and the use of RKOs studio backlot for much of the filming.

Tom Conway returns as The Falcon and has quite a lot of fun solving a mysteryn set on the backlot of a fictional independent film studio (which is really the RKO lot). The Falcon is also partnered with spunky cab driver Veda Ann Borg. SPOILER! Besides the fun setting for the mystery, it was also funny to see the mystery hinge upon the same plot device that was used in Mel Brooks' "The Producers" of a producer overselling percentages of the film and then wanting it to fail to he won't have to pay out.
