In a Sydney suburb, two nurses, Maria and Flora, a housekeeper, Lotte, and a solicitor, Arnold, attend to Elizabeth Hunter as her expatriate son Sir Basil, a famous but struggling actor in London, and daughter Dorothy, a divorced and down at heel princess, convene at her deathbed. They come to make sure they can leave Australia with their hefty inheritance.

The characters are very brittle and very difficult to sympathise with in many ways and so it presents the actors with tremendous challenges. But I think that they've overcome those challenges really very well indeed and there is some marvellous acting.

Geoffrey Rush and Judy Davis bookend a cast consisting of some of Oz's finest thesps, but Schepisi never gets a grip on a script with awkward literary tics.

Complex, damaged, self centred characters but there was something very likeable about them. Wonderfully portrayed by an incredible cast of actors. A multi-layered plot, where you are conscious of the fact that you are very much an observer.
