The English Surgeon confronts an issue that we rarely care to talk about, and that we simply refuse to recognized. This documentary displays the compassion of Dr. Henry Marsh, an English neurosurgeon, to give to those who are less fortunate in the only way he knows how. Dr. Marsh travels to Ukraine with nothing more than a used medical supplies and the heart of lion. His true test comes when he has to make the judgment call when patients? lives are on the line. Geoffrey Smith delivers a film long overdue for the uneducated masses that either refuse to believe the failure of health care systems in developing countries, or those who refuse to recognize the magnitude of the issue. The humanity of the film ignites the soul and inspires greatness. [FONT=Arial]

"Life is cruel" and this film is a masterpiece. It explores the extent and the limits of the human condition, without leaving a garden path outside the gates at the end. It takes about 10 minutes to forget you are watching a documentary film and much longer to forget some of Dr Smith's patients.

The operating scenes are enough to make you pray every day you never need to have that type of surgery. A devastating yet also optimistic documentary that makes you believe one person can truly make a difference in the world.

Exceptionally well-crafted, this doc may appeal most to those who have a doctor in the family. But I can't imagine anyone seeing it dispassionately.

Dr. Henry Marsh is a fascinating person, as evidently told in this amazing documentary. He travels around the world with broken equipment to help patients that may be doomed anyways, regardless of help. But he does it anyways, because it's the right thing to do. This film teaches us a lot about helping one another and that though we may make mistakes, it's the effort to change that makes it worthwhile.
