Dr. Henry Armitage, an expert in the occult, goes to the old Whateley manor in Dunwich looking for Nancy Wagner, a student who went missing the previous night. He is turned away by Wilbur, the family's insidious heir, who has plans for the young girl. But Armitage won't be deterred. Through conversations with the locals, he soon unearths the Whateleys' darkest secret — as well as a great evil.

This is ace. Its aged, and is a little tacky in places, but its vintage Corman Horror (part-written by Curtis Hanson and starring Dean Stockwell and Sandra Dee, with a cameo from Talia Shire), and it rattles along with brio and enthusiasm. Its surprisingly racy for a Sandra Dee vehicle, with loads of flesh on show (it is Corman after all) and Stockwell's strangely subdued in his role as the bad guy - although he does bring a frightening intensity to it. The soundtrack, by underrated genius Les Baxter, is ace, and the title sequence is great. This is silly, but its great fun, a solid Lovecraft adaptation.

This is probably my favorite movie adaptation of a Lovecraft story. It's not 100% faithful to the story, but it's great as a 70's style horror film.

I was kinda disappointed with this. was too slow most of the time and then whn finally got to action it was over to quick. Did like the lighting effect for the monster at the end though.

This does not have a lot in common with the original story, the character names and a few plot points and thats about it. It is an enjoyable enough 70's horror film, reminded me a lot of the Hammer films. H.P. Lovecraft never had filthy hippies in the story, but again, it was the 70's. Stockwell is weird and over the top as always and Sandra Dee was trying to break out of her good girl mold, but overall, the film feels cheap and silly.

The Dunwich Horror is a rather loose adaptation of the Lovecraft classic from Roger Corman's production studio. The sublime horror of Lovecraft's masterpiece of short fiction is mostly absent from this flim, but in its place we get a trippy, surrealistic piece of B-movie horror that is fun and bizarre from beginning to end. If you enjoy Corman's Poe flim or Hammer Studios films, then you are likely to find The Dunwich Horror to be a delighful if somewhat silly adaptation of Lovecraft.
