The Dreamlife of Angels (1998)

Isa and Marie bond while working in a French sweatshop and soon begin sharing an apartment that Marie is watching for a hospitalized mother and daughter. Marie, hoping to avoid a life of struggle and poverty, takes up with Chriss, a nightclub owner whose most attractive asset is his money. Isa recognizes the ultimate futility of the relationship and tries to keep Marie away from him, but her interference puts their friendship at risk.

i like it, not love it. it's a decent foreign film overall. isa proves to be a captivating character, but something else is lacking...not quite sure what.

Interesting observational drama about two women whos paths cross and the choices they make. Sensitively written and excellently performed - exploring the nuances of realism the way only French cinema can.

sublime wander narrative as in, let's wander about not because we're rich students on holiday backpacking through europe. no. wander 'cause we're fucking poor, hungry, displaced somewhere in france trying to survive, find work, believe, hope, live, smoke, move to the next squat-site desperate with no pride left nor hope maybe but one of us will dream big and the other will too but differently with grim results. great script, story and acting by both women.

One of the better recent French films, with a pair of knockout performances from Bouchez and Reignier. Lovely largely handheld camerawork; lovely off-the-cuff low-budget filmaking.
