The Divine Order (2017)

Nora is a young housewife and mother, living in a quaint little village with her husband and their two sons. The Swiss countryside is untouched by the major social upheavals the movement of 1968 has brought about. Nora's life is not affected either; she is a quiet person who is liked by everybody – until she starts to publicly fight for women's suffrage, which the men are due to vote on in a ballot on February 7, 1971.

(Mauro Lanari) 1) Well represented historical confusion between universal suffrage, equality of the sexes (today gender equality), sexual emancipation and rebelliousness for its own sake and self-destructive (from Hendrix to Joplin). 2) The follow-up of the ebb of a part of those feminist instances is missing: "If you are not a liberal when you are young, you have no heart, and if you are not a conservative when you are old, you have no brain". 3) Half a century later we are overwhelmed by so much more serious problems that rethinking about those battles is endearing.

Short on complexity and depth, The Divine Order gives us a parade of heroines and villains. Instead of raising questions, it seems to want to induce in viewers a sense of smugness.

This is a very enjoyable film centered around the women's suffrage movement in Switzerland in 1971(!) Although this is a political film, it also emphasizes the individual personalities of both the women and men in a small town in Switzerland, and shows their personal growth. There is both drama and comedy, and although the ending is generally happy, not all relationships survive - making it more true to life.

Though the film’s feel-good construction undercuts its ability to surprise, Petra Volpe’s cine-history lesson remains a mainstream crowd-pleaser adept at inspiring and amusing in equal measure.
