The Devil Bat (1940)

Dr. Paul Carruthers is frustrated because he thinks his employers, Mary Heath and Henry Morton, have cheated him out of the company's profits. He decides to get revenge by altering bats to grow twice their normal size and training them to attack when they smell a perfume of his own making. He mixes the perfume into a lotion, which he offers as a gift to Mary and Henry. When they turn up dead, a newspaper reporter decides to investigate.

In many of his movies, Bela Lugosi has bats in his belfry. But only in 'The Devil Bat' does he *really* have bats in his belfry, or at least in the secret chamber behind his hidden laboratory.

[font=Courier New]Dr. Caruthers (Bela Lugosi) feels animosity toward the company he sold a formula to after they make millions, and he is only giving a few thousand. So he devises a plan of revenge involving giant bats he has created in his secret laboratory. After giving various members of the families who own the company a shaving lotion, he releases the bats which are attracted to the scent of the lotion. I figured since it was going to be Halloween soon, I should try to watch a couple of my favorite horror films in celebration. [i]The Devil Bat[/i] isn?t one of the greatest movies ever made, but it is one of my favorite poverty row flicks that Lugosi was reduced to doing toward the end of his career. The movie is made enjoyable by Lugosi?s screen presence. Whether he is talking lovingly to his monster bats, or bidding his victims farewell, he seems perfectly fitted for this cornball role. Not to say that he isn?t a gifted actor. He is one of my favorite icons of early cinema. But this film still shows his talents just as well.[/font]

The Devil Bat is about a scientist experimenting on bats and ensuring that a certain scent provokes them; it appears to be similar to Frankenstein in terms of the basic premise and is neither thrilling nor scary. A scientist designs a scent that becomes popular and brings great profits to a family perfume producer while the scientist obtained only a lump cash amount. He then uses enlarged bats to kill the members of the profiting family but is killed by them when he is outsmarted by a reporter. 1/10
