The Dead is not the great zombie film I was hoping for but it does deliver a more grown-up horror film that eschews gimmicky shakycam and CGI to try and tell a real story, and for that I am appreciative.

I'm not much into zombie films but they seem to be everywhere (woop woop) so I only watch those that differ in any way from the pack. This indie was shot entirely in Africa, so there. The directors use the continent's vast, awe-inspiring landscapes to great effect, turning this nicely into a sort of a road-movie. Camera work is great and so is the sound. Pace is a winner, alternating from limb-ripping carnage to sun-drenched hopelessness, with just a few bumps when the cliches make their inevitable appearance. These and the mostly weak casting are just about the only flaws. The big stars are the zombies themselves - slow-moving (until they get too close), silent (until they get too close) and ever-present. Very old school. It all adds up to a deliciously tense viewing with assorted buckets of blood. Apparently, this was a pain to make. Thankfully, genre fans bought it in sufficient quantities to make it all worthwhile. If you are a horror fan, you should too.

Quick and to the point, this is a well made film and an impressive effort. The landscape of Africa is beautiful and helps create a sense of isolation from others. The effects, make up, and carnage are very good and believable. I went into the viewing with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised to find a solid contribution to the zombie genre. My only real disappointment with the film is that nothing really new was brought to the table. Well done and worth checking out for the upcoming halloween season, but we have seen it all before.

I could never see this movie driving towards any mass appeal, it won't pull in those who may like the more gorier reproductions nor does it have a multi million pound budget. That said it is one of the best zombie movies I have ever seen; seriously grounded and based on a very simple storyline, the pull of emotion is very heavy. Turn the lights out, bung some popcorn in the microwave and enjoy!

Awesome zombie throwback flick. Reminded me of Romero at times, minus the satire. Kinda mixed on the ending though.
