The Conformist has a decadent visual beauty about it that's breathtaking. But as striking as Bertolucci's classic looks, there's even more powerful stuff in the storytelling.

The best film by one of my all-time favorite directors, Bernardo Bertolucci. This character is so complex and interesting, especially when you consider that he becomes a symbol of fascism itself, and his whole life mirrors how it takes hold in society. This is the best political film I have ever seen.

An adaption of a novel by Albert Moravia, The Conformist is a haunting account of one man's enconter with fascism. Ravishingly shot and deeply profound this stands as a high-water mark of post-war European cinema

Watched it again recently. Gets better with every viewing. A director and cinematographer at the height of their respective games.
