The Comedy is the first comedy I've seen in a while to feel legitimately subversive in how it delivers its laughs and themes. It's not content to merely view the entitled and disaffected lifestyle it comments on; it revels in it, giving the movie ambiguity and sadness that goes beyond one-sided criticism of hipster culture, also making it utterly unpleasant and difficult. It's a hard film to like, but I see it as kind of avant-garde in its own quiet way.

I never thought Tim Heidecker would star in something I would describe as "compelling." The humor here is just as clever and disgusting as Awesome Show, but much more casual. It's mostly funny, but each joke is usually a full scene, so when it sometimes misfires you've got several minutes of chasing a bad joke. Heidecker puts on a surprisingly convincing performance here as he portrays a man who is finally reaching a point in his life where he cannot disconnect through jokes anymore, and I found myself satisfied with the destination his character arrives at. Some of the more artsy scenes kind of lack a point at times; although they do at times leave an interesting ambiguity as to what the mental state of the character is, it more often gives the path and flow of the film an aimless feel. What you get out of it is worth the flaws, though, and the movie ends up being a funny and memorable one.

like Old Joy, but with more scatalogical references. nobody seems to like this movie at all, but I say its worth a watch.

There's not a false note in the film, but maybe there's a difference between accuracy and truth.

This movie is mind-bendingly brilliant. It has such a personality I felt like I was somehow in this "story." A man who seems to resent life getting into random situations while waiting for his father to die. No real plot to follow. This movie has stuck with me ever since I watched it, and has to be one of the best films of recent years. Tim Heidecker showed me he isn't about all about stupidity/stoner comedy and fills this role perfectly.
