I feel like I'm betraying my dear Tim Heidecker to say so, but I walked away from this film really disappointed. While I came into this film with high hopes, given my admiration for his past work , "The Comedy" felt barely scripted, scattered and plot-less. On the upswing, the cinematography felt close, in-person and fresh. My favorite scenes were those where Swanson (Tim) would ferry his women home, after awkward sexual escapade, and in un-talking absolute silence, from his sail boat anchored in the East River.

Blew me away. A funny, experimental character study of a 30-something with no ambition or intimate connection with people, other than to push strangers to the limit for reaction. FYI, It's no "Tim & Eric" comedy, as it's more so an indie drama.. Its pacing can drag, but I was invested, and I really enjoyed it.

The Comedy, alongside The Master, was far and away the best film of last year. The low critic reviews are a little suprising, but not so much when we consider Kaufman's tragically low rating of 67 for Synechdoche New York. Sometimes they get it wrong. Firstly, Heidecker's turn as the lead in a serious film was criminally passed over. Naturalistic, realistic acting appears to be becoming a thing of the past in mainstream film, so his portrayal in this is refreshing. The movie is not a comedy, but it is very funny in parts, thanks mainly to Tim's cruel deadpan and his chemistry with Eric Wareheim. It's a character study, and one that finally targets the apathy and emotional distance of aging 30 year olds who aren't willing or able to let go of their youth or play the 'game.' Looking forward to seeing another film from the director, who has the potential of being a darker harsher Noah Baumbach.

If Sofia Coppola had directed Billy Madison, we would get a movie a lot like The Comedy. This is an aimless film with no story to speak of. This is simply a brief glimpse into the random life of an over privileged and vulgar man who says whatever pops into his warped brain and awaits the consequences that never come. As I was watching this ironically titled film, I couldn't tell if I was watching one of the best movies of the year, or one of the worst. But after a few days of consideration, I realized that many scenes from The Comedy were haunting me and Tim Heidecker pulls off a dramatically intense performance here as this despicable man, and it's nothing short of amazing.

It's a good satire on the cynical, sarcastic humor of a generation so preoccupied with not being the joke that they became one. The film's tedius nature supports it's point, and while I applaud the film's ambition (maybe the most ambitious since the compellingly pretentious Melancholia), it's hard not to get dragged down with our protagonist.Still, this is one of the few mumblecore films that uses this particularly popular cinematography and tone in a supportive and relevant way.
