The Cat and the Canary (1939)

Ten years after the death of millionaire Cyrus Norman, his will is to be read out to his six relatives, including Joyce Norman and Wally Campbell. Organized by Norman's lawyer, Crosby, the six meet at Norman's eerie New Orleans Gothic mansion. During the reading, the superstitious housekeeper declares that someone will be dead by midnight. Wally fears for Joyce when she is declared the sole inheritor, but all are alarmed when Crosby turns up dead.

Perfectly enjoyable comedy horror with Bob Hope in good form, Paulette Goddard and George Zucco.

This version stars Bob Hope and is re-make of the earlier silent film by the same name (which was based on a play by the name. As per the rules of an "old dark house" film, a will is read at midnight to a group of people in a mansion (this time in the bayou). The will states the first heir must remain sane for 30 days or it goes to the backup plan. Of course the other potential heirs attempt to drive the heiress batty. The heiress is a young hottie, so Bob Hope tries to get laid instead of driving her crazy. Not really any better than the silent-era version.

Early Bob Hope vehicle, stuffed with every Old Dark House clichÃ© - the reading of the will, the passage behind the bookcase, the painting with the moving eyes, and even a Mrs Danvers-like housekeeper. Bob Hope's wisecracks are pretty dreadful, but it's atmospherically designed, nicely performed, and done and dusted in 75 mins. There are worse ways to spend an evening.

While it's not as stylistically impressive as the 1927 Paul Leni silent, it's probably an all around more successful film.

Enjoyable horror/comedy story of Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard being summoned to an old dark house in a Louisiana bayous by a rich relative who's passed away for a reading of the will. Lots of spooky intrigue happens and Hope provides lots of one-liner quips, which is great if you're a fan of Hope. This was the film that solidified Hope as a star and he and Goddard make a great pair. Stilly, but lots of fun.
