I know when a film tries and The Boogeyman is one that tries over and over again and yet simply looks powerless to pull off the result, as all it can offer are the most basic features of the horror genre. Unfortunately, when you want to mask the weak spots of the plot and the lack of strength when it comes to generating frightens other than presenting dark corridors and simple jump scares, no matter how hard you try you're not going to go anywhere that matters. The Boogeyman as any other Stephen King adaptation had potential, what happens is that the people behind them don't know how to make the most of them.

The Boogeyman becomes an exercise in diminishing returns, though it is not without its pleasures.

James Berardinelli 05 Jun 2023

Those looking for a quick horror fix may be satisfied – there are enough jump-scares to fill a quota – but, when one considers the number of inventive and interesting genre titles that have graced multiplex screens in recent years, this a disappointing exception.

There’s nothing scarier than things that go bump in the night, but the terror is easily dispelled once we turn on the light and see what’s really there. That’s the lesson of King’s story, but Savage’s adaptation fails to understand that there’s nothing more frightening than the unknown.

Robert Abele 01 Jun 2023

The race to the end is certainly technically proficient, and all the actors gamely play out the ride (including an acid-tangy Marin Ireland making the most of her two scenes). But it’s not horror anymore — more like a medical drama with a race-against-time diagnosis and cure — and ultimately no memorable deepening of King’s ruthlessly efficient, vividly sketched black hole.
