Set in a futuristic world where the only sport that has survived in a wasted society is the brutal game known as jugging. Sallow, the leader of a rag-tag team, has played in the main Leagues before, but was cast out because of indiscretions with a lady. Now joined by a talented newcomer, Kidda, an ambitious young peasant girl, he and his team find they have one last chance for glory.

Remembered liking this when i was a kid and got a hold of a copy for nostalgia's sake - and it's quite brilliant, bearing in mind its low budget. A great cast led by the fantastic Rutger Hauer, turning in a great performance as ever, and served particularly well by support featuring Joan Chen (should have been a star, what happened to her?), Delroy Lindo and Vincent D'Onofrio. As with many other low-budget post apocalyptic movies it shares much with the Mad Max films, but makes no explanation of why the world is like this, it simply is. Also in many ways resembles any number of sports movies, so provides a familiarity to the story which allows you to sympathise with the characters. The dialogue is reasonable, and decently played, the action scenes are brutal and entertaining. All in all i would recommend this to any lovers of low-budget fare, as it has surprisingly few flaws, is directed and acted more than competently, and has an engaging plot which has you rooting for Hauer's team much in the same way as you rooted for Rocky.

I think this is the best post-apocalypse sci-fi movie ever. Even better then Mad Max. It is intruguingly real and enigmatic. Salute to Rutger! The director and writer David Webb Peoples is also screenplay writer for Bladerunner, Twelve Monkeys, Unforgiven and Soldier.

Oh what a amazing film, so origninal and well put together,probably watched Salute of the Jugger more than any films apart from Conan & star wars

One of the best never heard of films ever made. I fell in love with it in the first 5 mins and do every time I watch it. My first copy was a used video store VHS tape and waited patiently for years until it finally made it to DVD. When it did...there was much rejoicing. I think the writing made this film as the great lines flow through out...my fav...the last line..."Just walk"...that i'll do Joan..that i'll do.
