The Belly of an Architect (1987)

Stourley Kracklite, a driven, detail-obsessed architect, travels from America to Rome with his much younger wife, Louisa, to oversee an architectural homage to a personal hero, 18th-century master builder Etienne-Louis Boullée. En route by train, Stourley and Louisa conceive a much-wanted child — but Stourley's obsession with his wife's expanding belly, her perceived infidelity, and his own recurrent bouts of abdominal pain reach epic and dangerous proportions.

This one's an "interesting" Greenaway. Naturally, it's verbose and convoluted, as per any Greenaway film. Just couldn't get into Chloe Webb's performance for some reason. Dennehy is, of course, great. Even though it's not one of my favorites from the erudite maestro, any Greenaway film is always worth a look!

This was a bit strange, and that's the good part. Mostly pretty boring. Chloe Webb was terrible.

There's a good deal here to relish, even if the piece as a whole eventually descends into the same hermetic serialism of motifs that has consumed most of Greenaway's pictures.

Absolutely my least favourite Greenaway in terms of how - and can you imagine this of a Greenaway film? - generic this all looks and feels. No Nyman, no Vierny there. No fiery ambition. If you have watched some of his more obscure and deeper stuff and ever wondered what he would be like if he made more "mainstream" films, this is it.

Como suele suceder con Greenaway, lo que mas le hace daÃ±o es la lentitud de su ritmo y el distanciamiento de sus personajes a causa del filtro de su excesivo formalismo, pero su construccion estetica y la reflexion sobre los ciclos de la vida (reflejados en la obsesion de Greenaway y del protagonista por las panzas y los objetos esfericos) resultan bastante interesantes. Dennehy lo hace bien como el arquitecto y la musica, que sorprendentemente no es de Michael Nyman, es un plus.
