The Belly of an Architect (1987)

Stourley Kracklite, a driven, detail-obsessed architect, travels from America to Rome with his much younger wife, Louisa, to oversee an architectural homage to a personal hero, 18th-century master builder Etienne-Louis Boullée. En route by train, Stourley and Louisa conceive a much-wanted child — but Stourley's obsession with his wife's expanding belly, her perceived infidelity, and his own recurrent bouts of abdominal pain reach epic and dangerous proportions.

Peter Greenaway is my favourite director by far

Pure genius. The set up, the photography, the music, the plot. Art. I fell in love with Greenaway because of this movie. I still am.

See the magic photocopier that can make copies through the lid! Otherwise, very special.

Greenaway once more delivers a romantic, symbolic and aestheticist experience. The problem is that this time he misses the nail. True, some scene are sublime and sometimes he manages to put on the screen such feelings as pain, loneliness and specially jealousy. But overall it is fairly boring, no one really cares about any of the characters and some of the actors are straight out bad (Lambert Wilson as a fascist-leaning Italian architect is ridiculous). One thing really excited me though: the music. It is exciting and daunting at the same time.

Pretty much the same film as A Zed & Two Noughts, except it was made second--so it's less impressive--and it's not shot as well. Still, it's just as enjoyable to watch this equally obscure profession have an equally obscure obsession. But the architect's wife was AWFUL. Thank God she never received a respectable career, because it would have been undeserved.
