The Badlanders (1958)

Two men are released from the Arizona Territorial Prison at Yuma in 1898. One, The Dutchman, is out to get both gold and revenge from certain people in a small mining town who had him imprisoned unjustly. The other, McBain, is just trying to go straight, but that is easier said than done once The Dutchman involves him in his gold theft scheme. Based on the 1949 novel The Asphalt Jungle by W. R. Burnett, the story is given an 1898 setting. It is the second film adaptation of the novel following 1950's noir classic The Asphalt Jungle.

Interesting story, clumsily told. Had the makings of a great western: the crime-caper, the double-crossings, the romance, and throw in some personal histories and racial and social issues. For the most part, it works well. Yet some scenes are cringe-worthy in their clumsiness. Just about any scene involving Ernest Borgnine and Katy Jurado, for example. There was absolutely no chemistry there (and this is more the script's fault, rather than their's), and their relationship just seem contrived. Some of the twists in the plot are also quite predictable. This said, the movie moves along at a good pace, the action scenes are good, and the ending wraps up the story nicely. Good performance by Alan Ladd in the lead role. Good support from Ernest Borgnine, Katy Jurado and Claire Kelly. I can't believe Claire Kelly didn't become a bigger star: she certainly had the looks, and was a decent actress.

Monday, April 19, 2010 (1958) The Badlanders ACTION/ WESTERN After my fourth viewing after many, many, years, this film still holds up quite well about two unlikely candidates Alan Ladd and Ernest Borgine succumb to working together for some 'poetic justice' by robbing a gold mine!! Alan Ladd whose best known from the movie "Shane" and Ernest Borgenine known from "The Wild Bunch" star together in this unlikely classic was directed by Delmer Daves who directed the original "3:10 to Yuma"!! Enjoyable with a superficial ending!! The film has similar themes to Burt Kennedy's 1967 "War Wagon" starring John Wayne and Kirk Douglas! 4/4

Solid western with Ladd and Borgnine playing well off of each other. Well directed by Daves with good color photography and a lively pace. Katy Jurado is a strong second lead and looks particularly beautiful here. She and Borgnine were briefly married after this, quite a tempestous union.
