The Assassin (2015)

9th century China. Ten year old general's daughter Nie Yinniang is abducted by a nun who initiates her into the martial arts, transforming her into an exceptional assassin charged with eliminating cruel and corrupt local governors. One day, having failed in a task, she is sent back by her mistress to the land of her birth, with orders to kill the man to whom she was promised – a cousin who now leads the largest military region in North China. After 13 years of exile, the young woman must confront her parents, her memories and her long-repressed feelings.

Incredibly slow burn with majestic shallow depth cinematography. If this doesn't win Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars, someone paid the Academy.

The pictorial beauty of this scene is self-evident; it's in Hou's painstaking orchestration of each component part and the thematic weight imparted by their careful configuration that lends the film a steadily increasing romantic gravitas.

Yes the plot is mostly indecipherable but at a certain point you stop caring as I don't believe your supposed to be all that invested in the story. What matters are the visual and auditory elements . . . the gorgeous cinematography, the panoramic backgrounds, and the way the sounds of nature seem to hijack every scene.

A Political thinking about a lonely man/woman in a big time. Like China/Taiwan today, the Tang Dynasty has also the political problem about local government and central government. and the fantastic cinematography also represent the feeling.
