A model of documentary filmmaking and activist cinematic journalism: unfailingly entertaining, expertly constructed and undeniably -- perhaps justifiably -- biased.

Before offering my impressions, let me say this: I credit myself with a relatively objective viewpoint on documentaries. They are all, by nature, biased. The Art of the Steal is enormously so, and I am entirely aware of its decision to present only one side of a complex argument. The only feelings I can express on this film are of total outrage. Outrage at the pompous, immature, and apparently illegal discarding of a man's wishes for the future of his life's work. I don't imagine that Mr. Barnes' intentions were entirely pure, however they were surely more honorable than the desires of those continually seeking to detatch his Collection from its intended function. In my case, the movie did exactly what it was supposed to - got me angry and seeking more information.

Fascinating and sad story about the struggle to control the Barnes Foundation art collection.

A pharmacist who amassed a collection of Post-Impressionist paintings establishes the Barnes Foundation to care for the collection and educate the public. In his will, he stipulates that collection cannot be moved, loaned out, or disturbed in any way. Over the years, various organizations manipulate the legal system in order to gain control and will their way into history after the foundation is bankrupted by less than savory means. The whole affair upsets me and the documentary attempts to traverse the same path Dr Barnes did in avoiding the Philadelphia art elite.
