As soon as the characters begin the laborious process of self-analysis, the parade of guilts and obsessions could be marshaled and set in action by any halfway assiduous reader of Time magazine.

A masterpiece on the modern male. And directed with all the tricks that would make a younger director popular in our times, but Kazan had already done them in 1969

With weak characters and an even weaker story this movie brings shame upon Kirk Douglas. I don't even know why I saw this movie. Poor dialogue and precedented cinematography spells out "stay away."

I think the problem here is that Kazan was too involved. He adapted his own novel into a movie that he directed. I think having another director with some distance from the project would have made it a lot better. The plot also derails about halfway through. But the cast is great and there are experimental and fantasy elements that are really incredible.
