The Angel (1982)

The climbing of an immense staircase made up of the most varied stairs. Symbolic scenes occur on different levels where characters seem to be prisoners of their deeds and of their own folly. The steep staircase leads little by little towards the zones of great light where human beings and nonhuman beings meet.

Beautiful surreal images and mesmerizing music. I wouldn't doubt if Bokanowski was heavily influenced by experimental Polish animation, American silent era comedians, and early creepy stop motion because L'Ange has elements of all 3...and then some!

This film personifies experimental cinema. How the fuck did I wait so long to see this is beyond me. This film is the most hypnotic film I have ever seen I was transfixed on the screen. An unbelievable experience that I will never forget. Just incredible. p.s. if you have no interest in experimental film, please fuck off.

At one point in my life, I was so in love with two Bokanowski shorts I had on tape ("Dejeuner du Matin" and "La femme qui se poudre") that if I had had only one last wish before I died, I would have wanted to see "L'Ange". When I did get to see it years later, it felt more like a visual nuisance than the masterpiece I had imagined it would be. It is highly repetitive, with images that are physically painful to watch (if you don't like flashes and flickering stimuli), and it lacks cohesion. For me that was a big disappointment, although I would be unable to tell whether it was not as good as the shorts I had seen, or I had simply grown up in the meantime. As a major letdown, I would compare it to Piotr Kamler's "Chronopolis."

The images flow and repeat like the music on the soundtrack. I was completely hypnotized during the 2nd half.

A mesmerizing experience. The last 20 minute of images are stunning.
