These two make a hilariously great couple. It really makes one consider how young our country really is and how malleable our naval forces were in those days.

I was more enthusiastic about this film the first time I saw it (which was likely the result of being a little smitten with Andrews), but it holds up well on a subsequent screening. The three leads are wonderful; Garner seems born to play this part, and Coburn is unexpectedly hilarious. The primary selling point, of course, is Chayefsky's screen play. If you're willing to accept that the film doesn't intersect with reality on any level, then it becomes quite easy to enjoy the exceedingly smart dialogue (when was the last time you heard a character in an American film use the word "ingenuous"?) and distinct quality of Chayefsky's satire, exemplified by the plot twist that sees the cynical ramblings of a senile officer become a patriotic duty. Chayefsky's response to such patriotism? A soldier throwing up in his helmet.

Great film--don't listen to the "critics." Great music, humor, script, satire of war--it's all carried out magnificently! '"Nuff said," said the non-critic!

Emily Barham: I believe in honor, service, courage, and fair play, and cricket, and all the other symbols of British character. Which have only civilized half the world! Lt. Cmdr. Charles E. Madison: You British plundered half the world for your own profit, let's not pass it off as the age of enlightenment. A wonderful film that balance love with war and motivates the coward. The dialogue is well written. The movie is well acted.

Filmed in between Mary Poppins and Sound of Music, but brought out after TSOM, Emily did not do as well as it should have, as people were not able to accept Julie as anything but a pure, virginal nanny. TAOE is one of Julie's best films! Her acting is top rate, and the chemistry between her and James (in their first time working together!) is more than evident! Satirical humour at its best!!
