Richard Hannay, a mining engineer on holiday from the African colonies, finds London socialite life terribly dull. Yet it's more than he bargained for when a secret agent bursts into his room and entrusts him with a coded notebook, concerning the impending start of World War I. In no time both German agents and the British law are chasing him, ruthlessly coveting the Roman numerals code, which Hannay believes he must personally crack.

A little bit rushed and lacking a certain element of suspence at times, certainly too short, but also filled with surprise. Starring a superb (!) Rupert Penry-Jones, who is really the attention catalyst of the movie. For those who like solid (costume drama) BBC productions.

An enjoyable adventure of a man mistaken as a spy who has to go on the run. It's nowhere near as good as the 30's and 70's version. Why omit some of the things like the hanging from Big Ben sequence for instance. Rupert Henry-Jones does his best as Hannay but he's not as charismatic as Robert Powell. The cinematography showing the breathtaking Scottish Highlands is fantastic and the action when it happens is fairly exciting. On reflection though, this version of The 39 Steps is thrilling but entirely forgettable. There are better versions of the story available.

A bit tongue-in-cheek; certainly compared with the earlier (50's?) version I remember from childhood. I wonder if some aspects of the plot are a bit lost on the younger generation these days.

For a straight to TV film, this was actually pretty entertaining. I have not seen the original "The 39 Steps" so I do not know how this compares to the original.

Dull, unengaging and just plain silly. I couldn't even be bothered to watch it to the end.
