For certain a touching tragedy successfully adapted from Hardy's classic. But i am simply too tired of the stereotype of innocent, pure and young beauty playing the role of the victim.

There is kind of lyricism that draws me to this film. It looks and feels like my dreams and that is rare indeed.

In many ways, a masterpiece - especially cinematographically - and a stunning debut for Kinski. Ironically, this film is current, the Hardy story about how men, rascals & robed, and hypocrites, impact & harm young, hopeful women's lives - and this op-ed from a senior man. A good and involved father is probably the best vaccination. But alas, Tess doesn't have one. | ~ Norm de Guerre

This film was almost exact replication of Thomas Hardy's novel Tess of the d'Ubervilles." It's rare to watch a film after reading the novel and not be disappointed by it, but this film didn't disappoint in any. Details, such as whiteness of the maid's dresses, sound of milk squirting into a bucket, sloshing mud of wet English turnip field, and glint of adoration in the eyes of the young lovers - all came gloriously to life as if fresh off pages of the book.
