Temptress Moon (1996)

Set in the decadent 1920s, Temptress Moon tells the very complicated story of a wealthy family living on the outskirts of Shanghai. Their youngest daughter, Ruyi, is brought up as a servant to her opium-addicted father and brother. Meanwhile, her brother-in-law Zhongliang has a successful, if illegal, career seducing and blackmailing married women in the city. When he comes to Ruyi's home the two fall in love, and trouble ensues.

First time I saw this movie many many years ago, I couldn't stand it. But a day or two afterwards it was still in my head and it just become more and more on my mind until I had to watch it again and again and again and then see everything else by Chen Kaige and from there... I think if I hadn't seen this movie, I may never have gotten drawn into East Asian Studies and certainly would be in an entirely different place now. Also, it's beautifully shot and well acted

What a seductive movie! Almost as steamy and beautiful as the smoke-filled dreams we frequently entertain! It temps and haunts. Beautiful imagery, strong performance and a great storyline

No doubt, the visuals are excellent as well the acting of the leads, Gong Lee (Ruyi) and Leslie Cheung (Zhongliang) . But unfortunately I have to agree with other reviewers, the plot is very confusing and difficult to catch up. I was looking for a movie of the same caliber than Farewell my concubine, but I was disappointed.

Temptress Moon is nice to look at but I found the plot and characters difficult to follow. Reading some of the contemporary reviews, I find I wasn't the only one. Oh, there may be an allegory mixed up somewhere in this story too but that was lost on me as well.
