Tales from the Golden Age (2009)

Composed of six unconventional vignettes, each one dealing with the late communist period in Romania, a narrative is told through its urban myths from the perspective of ordinary people. The title refers to the alluded "Golden Age" of the last 15 years of Ceaușescu's regime.

More often than not, this mixed bag hits its mark, but in two drawn-out stories, the rhythm, not to mention the absurdist plot twists, fall flat.

Clearly funny and clear revenge for years of communism the more comedic side of all that comrade partly line politics of eastern Europe

A remarkable film that re-enacts 5 tales from Ceausescu's Romania, a superb companion piece to other recent Romanian movies such as The Death of Mr. Lazarescu. This may be the best of the lot. All the "tales" are good but the centrepiece involving a pig, some gas and an attempt to avoid the rations brokers is the most memorable. Certainly there are no lily-livered notices about no animals being harmed in the making of this movie here, although there is no evidence that the porker in question actually did come to an ignominious end. The film also avoids gloomy cliches of slushy streets and grey buildings. Romania's warm summers are evident and despite the sheer barminess of the regime, people remain streetwise.

Boasts tonal cohesiveness but also a dispiriting lack of bite.

I came into this knowing virtually nothing about Romanian culture in this period. I was not only entertained (there's a lot of emphasis on humour), but had the wonderful experience of hearing & seeing this fantastic storytelling. The short films tie in together smoothly to form a cohesive whole that relays various urban legends from life under the Ceaucescu dictatorship. While many details were certainly foreign to my own experience growing up in Canada, the stories are still relatable. They deal in themes of love, humour, survival & pursuit of dreams- universal themes reflected in the stories of every culture. Above these common threads are overlaid the particular details of the era, the people's stories detailing life under Ceaucescu, which are fascinating to see & hear.
