In Manhattan's Central Park, a film crew directed by William Greaves is shooting a screen test with various pairs of actors. It's a confrontation between a couple: he demands to know what's wrong, she challenges his sexual orientation. Cameras shoot the exchange, and another camera records Greaves and his crew. Sometimes we watch the crew discussing this scene, its language, and the process of making a movie. Is there such a thing as natural language? Are all things related to sex? The camera records distractions - a woman rides horseback past them; a garrulous homeless vet who sleeps in the park chats them up. What's the nature of making a movie?

A fiction film within a documentary within a documentary within a psychodrama within a documentary. An excellent example of American veritÃ©.

A novel experiment in social engineering and filmmaking. Director William Greaves shoots a remarkably (and deliberately) banal scene in Central Park while other cameras record the crew and/or the surroundings. The results are pretty interesting, especially when the crew begins to question the director's intentions.

A cool concept but I just dont think it was executed as well as it could have been. There was too much left up to the crew and the actors to decide, and in the end it only collapses on itself. It fails because the filmmakers do not understand exactly what they are trying to do, and the film serves only as an interesting failure but nothing more than that.

This is a comment on "Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take 2 1/2" but it is not listed independently on Mubi. The genius is that the creative control fluidly shifts not only between the actors, directors, producers and crew, but also the viewer, making the film one of the more engrossing, collaborative experiences you will ever have from the comfort of your own couch. Any attempt to assign meaning to the process is an attempt to exert creative control over the end product. As such, this review is as much a part of the movie as anything on the DVD. 5 out of 5 stars.

A novel experimental film that plays with the idea of real vs. reel. Is the celebrate documentarian Greaves pretending to be an idiot or is he really as inept as he appears? Was the crew rebellion part of his plan? To find out, you're gonna have to watch it. Highly recommended.
