Swing (2002)

In a suburb of Strasbourg, Alsace, France, ten year old boy, Max, spends his summer vacation with his grandmother. He hears Manouche gypsy Romani music being played in a local bar, and loves it. He goes to visit the gypsies in search of a guitar, where he meets a young Romani tomboy, 'Swing'. She introduces Max to her gypsy community who live in caravans and down-at-heel public housing. Over several days, Max is taken into the community to witness Romani lifestyle, traditions, knowledge of plants, and particularly their Manouche music. Max is particularly fascinated by Miraldo, the Romani guitarist he first heard in the bar, and asks to take guitar lessons with him (Miraldo is played by one of the greatest guitarists of gypsy jazz, Tchavolo Schmitt).

Swing, ups and downs, gives that feeling you get when you watvh 400 Blows, but less intense... more of a swing to it I guess.

Nice little film about music, friendship and love. The kids are excellent and some of the group musical scenes are amazing. Vive la musique Manouche!

Delightful movie that seemingly has an amateur cast. As an impressionist exploration of French 'gypsy' (or Romany) culture and particularly Manouche music it is a huge success. It is roughly made but this is in keeping with the wonderful impressions that the film conveys, I have had a strong urge to visit the Alsace region since watching it. Faint echoes of the extermination and forced sterilization of Roma by the Nazis reverberate darkly and gently through the film. There is also glimpse of a fascinating sort of cross pollination with North African (muslim) culture from whence the Roma traditionally had their genesis. An unmissable movie for fans of Manouche, gypsy jazz, Django Rinehart and Stephan Grapelli.
