Supernova (2020)

Sam and Tusker, partners of 20 years, are traveling across England in their old RV visiting friends, family and places from their past. Since Tusker was diagnosed with early-onset dementia two years ago, their time together is the most important thing they have. As the trip progresses, however, their ideas for the future clash, secrets come out, and their love for each other is tested as never before. Ultimately, they must confront the question of what it means to love one another in the face of Tusker's illness.

Supernova isn’t adapted from a play, but it sometimes feels like it was, not because of its talkiness or the tightness of its focus, but because it has a tendency to be a little blunter in practice than its understated initial tone might have you expect. The performances are lovely, though, and they carry this minor-key movie through to its ambiguous end.

An elegant and sober drama about illness, relationship, love, acceptance, letting go, and saying goodbye. Perhaps it doesn't expose so much, nor does it propose much in terms of everything that a drama of this kind entails, but it's also appreciated that it's not a merciless whirlwind of tears and pain. I mean, the situation the protagonists face is really painful, but that doesn't imply that the same situation should become a miserable affair, like many other films tend to do in order to emotionally manipulate their viewers. Very good performances by its two leads, although I think they will be left out of any mention in the next awards season.

With these two actors in command, Supernova doesn’t just dare to speak the name of a love between two deeply committed men facing an untenable situation. It shouts it from the rooftops.

This is some of the heaviest stuff I've watched so far this year. Sam and Tusker - the protagonist couple - just have this brilliant dynamic and the whole movie turns from a fun field trip into a melancholic drama. I never really tear up while watching films, but I was bloody close during the last 20 or so minutes. It's only 90 minutes long, but it felt like 3 hours, I don't know whether that was a good or a bad thing, maybe I just wanted to escape this carnage mentally, but also felt tied to the screen at the same time. The characters just feel so real, when Tusker throws a party for him and Sam, everything involved just feels as if someone had filmed a - surely tragic - gathering and Tusker and Sam can just be who they are, an old couple with its regular problems, no corny dialogue needed. If you're in a good mood and want to change this, I definitely recommend watching this.

Supernova is modest in every respect except its emotional impact. In the characters’ internal arcs, the title—the name for a stellar explosion—comes fully into perspective.
