Sunset Edge (2015)

Two narratives clash violently in this meditative portrayal of disaffected youth set in a graveyard of abandoned mobile homes known as Sunset Edge. We follow a group of four aimless, suburban teenagers - they skateboard the park, sleep in the sun, and rummage through the decaying remains completely unaware that this is where a lonesome teen is confronting a horrific past. Day turns to night, people disappear, and the secrets of Sunset Edge are revealed in a paralyzing finale.

A bounty of bucolic rural imagery, skateboard meanderings and bristles of crunchy sound design heighten its shambling assemblage of familiar teen coming-of-age details, lightly suggestive horror imagery and intermittent visual lyricism.

A coming-of-age drama that's also Southern Gothic ghost story, is an unusual, ambitious failure, mostly because the film's hyper-naturalistic style is meant to evoke a supernatural mood.

The way the two story lines come together, involving paintball guns and morphsuits, is more mundane and less spooky than the tone up to that point suggests, but the point of Sunset Edge isn't really the surface narrative.

The movie follows four bored teens who have nothing better to do than spend their time in an abandoned trailer park. There isn't much depth until the last half of the movie where you get a brief thrilling history of the trailer park. The movie does not progress in chronological order either, leaving the viewer to put together the puzzle of 'what happened first' (I personally liked that). Although it's slow at first, the natural lighting combined with the still frames kept me attentive throughout the entire movie.

This resolutely lo-fi and hauntingly lovely movie . . . ventures instead into the hypnagogic minimalist territory of other beautiful head-scratchers like Last Year at Marienbad or Picnic at Hanging Rock.
