Summer Rental (1985)

Jack Chester, an overworked air traffic controller, takes his family on vacation to the beach. Things immediately start to go wrong for the Chesters, and steadily get worse. Jack ends up in a feud with a local yachtsman, and has to race him to regain his pride and family's respect.

This comedic John Candy vehicle tells the story of a burnt-out air traffic controller who takes his family on a vacation and learns how to sail. In so doing, he finds himself again. Ordinarily, I might not rate this film so high, but I have given it five stars for purely personal reasons. This flick was first shown to me by my now-deceased grandfather and always brings to mind great memories of a very happy day for me.

If you love the great comics of the 70's and 80's, you have to see this film. Though I do recommend this film to everyone of all ages, I know that, that certain group of people will cherish this film more so. This has got to be the best John Candy film ever made. One reason he is the star, he is not sharing the spotlight with anyone else. A slim Rip Torn has a supporting role in this film that compliments Candy's. He noless plays a wanna be pirate. Imagine all the things that could go wrong on a summer vaccation, well poor John, that is exactly what happens to John's family vaccation in this film. Light hearted and fun. This film is full of laughter and will make you smile from ear to ear.

Your typical 80's family comedy. John Candy's character challenges a local sailboat captain to a race, there's the 80's montage of them fixing up a clunker of a boat, and then the come from behind victory at the end. Cookie cutter storyline, but still an enjoyable and funny move.
