"Easily one of the best films of 09 and simply one of the best sports films ever made. Algenis Perez Soto who played Sugar did a very solid job, he has a great future in movies, he's a very good actor. The whole movie is just amazing. I'm a baseball fan (Cubs fan) and I didn't only loved it because of that but also because the movie is so human and true."

An interesting follow up to Half Nelson for filmmaking couple Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. There is a lovely balance between intelligence and passion for a sport that is so often lacking (Friday Night Lights, being the only film in recent memory to match this). The film tries to tackle a bit too much (drugs, injury, etc,) and could have done with a little trim but this remained from start to finish a really engaging and charming film.

This is not just a sports movie, but is also really a very human story about the the difficulties that a foreign baseball player who speaks little English has to deal with in trying to make it to the Big Leagues in the US. What was particularly interesting to me was the way it captured the intense competition among talented players trying to reach the pinnacle of the sport. Rising young layers who are better than 99.9% than most of us can ever dream to be suddenly find themselves in competition with others who are also better than 99.9% of us, and only some of those have whatever extra is required to make it further--while the others, who are perhaps not used to failure, suddenly find themselves stopped in their tracks.

An interesting movie about the globalization of baseball and the hardships of cultural integration. I think the movie would have been better served by taking a harder look at some of the exploitation that goes on in these scenarios. So...good movie, but not great.
