Stockholm, which gently massages actual events to serve as a fine vehicle for Noomi Rapace and Ethan Hawke, is far from the first movie to believably show a crime victim coming to sympathize with a criminal. But it's a funny and agile one.

Drowsy in feel and muted in color, Stockholm is lightly amusing and watchable — mostly thanks to Hawke — but never makes the case that this is a story that needed to be told, with or without laughs.

The opening title says “Based on an absurd but true story,” yet there’s nothing absurd about the facts. Improbable? Yes. Hapless and desperate? Most definitely. But the absurdity — the impulse to giggle — is mostly there in the eye of the writer-director, Robert Budreau, who collaborated with Hawke two years ago on the entrancing Chet Baker biopic “Born to Be Blue” but here comes off as a far less sure-handed filmmaker.

I've read a lot of comparisons to Dog Day Afternoon, but beyond certain similarities, frankly those comparisons turn out to be too far-fetched, and will ultimately create quite the wrong expectations in people. Stockholm is based on a true story, and that adds an extra flavor to the story. The interest is bigger, so to speak. However, the same film exposes it as an absurd story, so the notorious inconsistency in tonality and development, makes it a film that's hardly taking itself seriously, which would not be so negative, if at least the experience was more stimulating. Ethan Hawke, without effort, manages to make the film not entirely disposable, but there really isn't anything meaningful to rescue from this.

Stockholm has a little bit of everything: dark comedy, crime, drama, romance, political commentary, you name it! As chaotic as this might seem, it fits perfectly within the outrageous context of the true story that this biopic is based on. Ethan Hawke continues the mayhem with a wildly successful reflection of the absurd nature of Lars Nystrom. All of this insanity accumulates to an exhilarating revitalization of the heist genre that is worthy of the ranks of favorites like Dog Day Afternoon.
