If you’re willing to take the movie for what it really is — a fairly generic caper inspired by, rather than based on, actual events — you’ll find just enough to appreciate.

Stockholm’s far more than just your typical heist movie. With incredible performances, witty writing, and a great soundtrack, Stockholm brings a unique heist story to life in the only way acceptable for such an unbelievable story. The film is sarcastic and dark, but lighthearted and can make you smile at times. The script made me laugh at points, especially Ethan Hawke’s character and his lines. Definitely worth a watch.

Stockholm is a stranger than fiction story that actually turns out to be based on an absurd true story of a bank robbery set in a Swedish bank, 1973. Emotions and absolute extremes from actor Ethan Hawke portraying robber Lars Nystrom lends a must see performance to audience members. The outlaw persona from Hawke’s character drives the pacing and direction of the story, and we find the captured hostages slowly supporting this outlaw over their own Swedish government who seem to have given up on their safety. This occurrence is actually where the condition of Stockholm syndrome stems from, and really creates a nice depth to the overall production of the true story aspect. Throughout the film we even see Lar’s character reveal sympathy that takes away from his macho badass mantra, and it shows why one of the bank tellers played by Noomi Rapace ends up falling for him. This is a complete story that gives a fun, grungy, and sarcastic heist movie new life in the era of superhero movies.

Stockholm is the hidden gem of the summer! Big blockbusters like Endgame aren’t as much my thing, so I was thrilled to find out Ethan Hawke was going to be doing a crazy bank heist movie, especially one based on a true story that I hadn’t been familiar with. The director Robert Budreau does an outstanding job of making this film a joy to watch while also leaving you scratching your head wondering why you feel the way you do.

The best thing you can say about Stockholm is that it’s good enough to prove that a much better film could be made from this story.
