Leonard Schiller once counted among New York's literary lions, but illness and ten years of writer's block have lowered his profile, almost to the point of obscurity. When Heather Wolfe, an ambitious literature major, asks to interview him for her thesis on his work, her interest forces him to address the issues that he has avoided all these years, and stirs in him feelings he has long forgotten, much to his daughter's consternation.

Let me get this straight: I get to see Frank Langella make out with a pretty, young girl AND see him full frontal as he gets out of a tub!?!?!?! FIVE STARS!!!

wonderful film. talky without being boring, literary without be snooty. wonderful performances by all of the primary cast. a few times i wasn't sure if i liked the way things between frank langella and lauren ambrose progressed, but i became okay with it by the end of the film.

The movie is carefully modulated to draw us deeper and deeper into the situation, and uses no contrived plot devices to superimpose plot jolts on what is, after all, a story involving four civilized people who are only trying, each in a different way, to find happiness.

Superbly acted and scripted. Having seen Langella in Frost/Nixon, I continue to be amazed of his ability to carry the full weight of a character's life on his shoulders. The dialogue is sparse, but every movement and breath is imbued with a conversational meaning. Also, a great comment on the state of the literary world. The arguments were kept to the subplot, making them infinitely more effective and not preachy. The completeness of vision was impressive as well. They knew this should be a 'small' film, almost claustrophobic, with the four main characters trapped in their small apartments with one another.
