Stand Clear of the Closing Doors (2014)

When autistic teen Ricky is scolded for skipping class, he escapes into the subway for a days-long odyssey among the subway's disparate denizens. Meanwhile, his mother wages an escalating search effort above ground. Based on a true story and set in Far Rockaway, Queens, in the days leading up to Hurricane Sandy, these parallel stories of mother and son take the viewer on a touching journey of community and connection in and below New York City.

The sincerity and earnestness of Stand Clear of the Closing Doors are brave and true.

Xander K 04 Mar 2014

A touching film that deals with heavy issues such as autism, undocumented residents, family dynamics, and natural disasters. It is at times dull, but should be lauded for the way it gives the audience insight into the perspective of an autistic youth.

Farran Smith Nehme 20 May 2014

This is the sort of movie that gets called “hallucinatory,” but it is strongly grounded in the New York in which 99 percent of us live. Fleischner gets his uncanny effects simply by showing what this city looks like to a child who has a different filter.

John DeFore 22 Apr 2014

Action takes a backseat to local color in well-acted drama.

Robert Roten 24 Dec 2014

Cinematographers Adam Jandrup and Ethan Palmer use a variety of thoughtful camera techniques like point of view, soft focus, lens flares, closeups and reflections to show how an autistic child might see his environment.
