Stage Beauty (2004)

Humble Maria, who outfits top London theater star Ned Kynaston, takes none of the credit for the male actor's success at playing women. And because this is the 17th century, Maria, like other females, is prohibited from pursuing her dream of acting. But when powerful people support her, King Charles II lifts the ban on female stage performers. And just as Maria aided Ned, she needs his help to learn her new profession.

This movie was brilliant. I wasn't sure if I was going to like it because I don't always enjoy period films involving Shakespeare, bt wow. This had my attention early on in the film, and pulled me for a memorable ride. Billy Crudup and Claire Danes were perfect as the leads. They had such an electric chemistry, and just worked well with each other. Crudup especially gave such an excellent performance, I'm disappointed he didn't get an Oscar nomination, at the very least. Stage Beauty funny, insightful, smart, witty, refreshing. Defintiely a must see.

[I mentioned some specific scenes, so.. possible spoilers?] I really can't help it -- I love this movie. It takes a familiar plot line -- Man betters himself because of woman -- and throws it into a wholly new setting. Not only that, but it adds complications like Ned's bisexuality and burlesque career; also Mariah's position as both damner and savior. Again, I can't even help it that I love this movie so much... With scenes like the beating of Ned by his former admirers and also the powerfully emotional performance of Desdemona's death in Othello at the end of the movie, it earns every star.

I found it really deep... although it may not seem like it.... the things both characters said were so beautiful... e.g. Billy Crudup: (with a wonderful english accent) women do everything beautifully. they even die beautifully... there is nothing in playing a man, nothing beautiful about that. then Claire Danes: (also lovely english accent) your tutor did you a great disadvantage. He taught you how to act like a woman, to swoon, to DIE beautifully!... but he never taught you to SUFFER like a woman! A woman would fight, no matter how much she loved the man. Women FIGHT!

Because more than loving the movie you love theater and that somthing pretty rare in movies. And of course,Billy Crudup and Claire Danes are fantastic and matching very well.
