Soul Power (2009)

Soul Power is a 2008 documentary film about the Zaire 74 music festival in Kinshasa which accompanied the Rumble in the Jungle heavyweight boxing championship match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in October 1974. The film was made from archival footage; other footage shot at the time focusing on the fight was edited to form the film When We Were Kings.

It doesn't disappoint. The line-up reads like a Who's Who of 70s soul and R&B. And the sound quality's shockingly good.

Takes too long to get to the meat of its matter, but captivates once it does.

This is an intensely moving historical documentation with great behind the scenes footage of some of the greatest musicians of both continents. I only wish they would have included more concert footage. On the down side, the camera work is rather haphazard and the doc completely lacks the African perspective of what that concert meant for the people of Zaire and the African musicians (most of them superstars in most of Africa).

There's a dearth of music for a performance movie. I'm not sure why the film went so much heavier on the documentary than on the music, but it's a lean mixture.

It is hard to believe that this was filmed in 1974 but not released until 2009. I would have hoped for more of the concert and less of the backstage/landscape footage. To see James Brown, Miriam Makeba, Celia Cruz, B.B. King and Bill Withers was incredible. Also worth watching for the Ali footage, interviews.
