Soul Power (2009)

Soul Power is a 2008 documentary film about the Zaire 74 music festival in Kinshasa which accompanied the Rumble in the Jungle heavyweight boxing championship match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in October 1974. The film was made from archival footage; other footage shot at the time focusing on the fight was edited to form the film When We Were Kings.

Not only is this documentary about a legendary music / sports event in Zaire pulsing, unbiased, joyous, and socially powerful; it also has the distinction of having the greatest bongo solo ever caught on film.

Ali motormouth footage left over from When We Were Kings. Actually, this whole film was made from WWWK leftovers, we learn. But we manage to forget that detail whenever the music soars.

Well produced and entertaining documentary about the 3-day music festival that preceded the legendary 1974 fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in Zaire. The entire show was filmed for theatrical release but doesn't seem to have surfaced until now. Great performances from several soul and world music legends. My only complaint is that it wasn't long enough. I'm hoping the DVD release will yield more performance footage.

Some may complain about the lack of contextualizing material but what is on the screen is so exciting and energetic that most viewers will probably be too busy tapping their feet and swaying their heads to the beats on display to notice or care.
