Sonita (2016)

If 18-year-old Sonita had a say, Michael Jackson and Rihanna would be her parents and she'd be a rapper who tells the story of Afghan women and their fate as child brides. She finds out that her family plans to sell her to an unknown husband for $9,000.

A crushing and intense docufiction that believes in the heroic kindness of its protagonist's challenging attitude and in irony as salvation. [Full review in Spanish]

There's often a question mark over how involved a documentarian has become with their subject and here Ghaemmaghami confronts the issue head on, showing how she becomes not just a recorder of what happens but a catalyst for change.

Hannah McGill 16 Oct 2016

A punchy, crowd-pleasing documentary about a young Afghan woman who becomes a rapper.

There's a point where this turns and goes in an unexpected direction half way through that I felt should have created a big change in how things were represented but didn't which was a bit odd but overall very good and engaging.

Moving, fascinating, inspiring.... saw this film at a conference and am bringing it to the campus at the college where I teach. An inside look at the reality of young women under the Taliban. Documentary filmmakers and students should take note of this very special film as the question of, "should a documentarian become involved in the subject?" is answered for this particular unique case.
