Sonatine (1993)

Murakawa, an aging Tokyo yakuza tiring of gangster life, is sent by his boss to Okinawa along with a few of his henchmen to help end a gang war, supposedly as mediators between two warring clans. He finds that the dispute between the clans is insignificant and whilst wondering why he was sent to Okinawa at all, his group is attacked in an ambush. The survivors flee and make a decision to lay low at the beach while they await further instructions.

Kitano at the pinnacle as a movie creator. If you want to peek inside the mind of a man who's on the verge of suicide, no other films can match this one as it gets as real as it can be.

The most tragic movie about playful gangsters you'll ever see.

L'un des meilleurs Kitano si ce n'est le meilleur.

yakuza are cool, they have cool tattoos, they chop there own fingers off and they gut themselves for a laugh, basically, this films great.

The begining is a little slow but I did end up really liking this film. It so strange because it's about yakuza, but it has really touching, soft and innocent scenes as well. The sumo wrestling part is awsome!
