Good movie, slow at times. Beautiful transition from the old china to the new shanghai. If you visited china this is a most see movie.

In this lavish adaptation of Lisa See's novel, the complex chronologies of the parallel narratives are skillfully handled by director Wayne Wang, which makes his reliance on unbridled sentimentality all the more irritating.

Maybe as a woman, I see this film differently than some of the reviewers who are men. From almost the very beginning, I was emotionally engrossed and intellectually involved in the story. The two women were wonderful, believable and beautiful. There was a sensitivity not seen to often in American films about women. In addition, the visuals were wonderful and fades back and forth kept the story involving and intriguing.
