This latest film aims for "The Joy Luck Club's" crossover appeal but ends up stilted and emotionally remote.

Really only half based on the novel that I loved. The modern day storyline was ok, but I would have preferred to focus on the 19th century story more. An added bonus was seeing Hugh Jackman crooning in English and Mandarin in a Shanghai nightclub scene.

It is a good film but I rather read the book again, I can get more feelings and details of the real story.

Basically, the movie was from the Book. It reflects how the world changing affects the life of every person with deep friendship and acts as real sisters which in chinese history it is called laotong. It was a sad and not that really significant impact for me but as a whole it contributes the deep meaning of friendship and love. I thought it could be very interesting as other based chinese stories-movies I watched but this one is not that good and not that bad.

Rather low ratings on this one but I enjoy this sort of historical fiction about cultures I want to know more about. So it that sense it is quite good, with good acting and beautiful scenery and cinematography.
