Smashed (2012)

Kate and Charlie like to have a good time. Their marriage thrives on a shared fondness for music, laughter… and getting smashed. When Kate's partying spirals into hard-core asocial behavior, compromising her job as an elementary schoolteacher, something's got to give. But change isn't exactly a cakewalk. Sobriety means she will have to confront the lies she's been spinning at work, her troubling relationship with her mother, and the nature of her bond with Charlie.

Seeing Mary Elizabeth Winstead's realistic dealings with becoming sober is both extraordinary and heartbreaking. Smashed delivers impeccable performances, a beautiful ending, and a desperately real look on life.

Very good performances by Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Paul it felt true to life, something that most movies that cover this topic don't tend to feel.

I saw this movie yesterday .. and wow ! This is an amazing movie .. A very honest and scary portrayal of alcohol abuse. What starts out in the beginning as something innocent and harmless escalates into something dangerous and destructive for both of the main characters.

I saw this last week as part of my TIFF 2012 list. It was amazing, I mean the characters were played so well especially Mary Elizabeth Winstead's, she brought her A-game on this one, definitely a game-changer. I loved how simple the premise was, but the story had its complexities as well & the actors were fantastic in it.

Though it falls into some typical histrionics of the "sobering-up" sub-genre, Smashed is remarkably restrained and real. The supporting cast is fine (Mullally) to very good (Paul), but the movie rest on Winstead's shoulders and she is fantastic. It's a rich, layered performance that conveys quite a lot just through the way she carries herself. It may be a simple, small movie (and not always easy to sit though - though it can be very funny) but it's definitely worth a look.
