the third film after Viridianna and EXTERMINATOR ANGEL....IF in the first Luis Buñuel is studding the flesh , and in the second the power and human vanity here is talking with his unique style about man and GOD ...there is a mistake in the information of film . Simon hired to the column not to be nearest to God , but as a hard ascetic mood ., it was a trial we had very early in the history of Christianism ....first in East dogma and later to Catholicism ...there is the saint Simon or in Simeon , who lived for many years in a column in Egypt desert

Bizarre religious 45 min. movie from master BuÃ±uel. How do you get closer to God? By letting your beard grow, sacrificing yourself by stading on one foot or climbing up on a column in the middle of the desert? Religion is not really evil in the eyes of BuÃ±uel just quite meaningless and silly as... hmmm... hell. Aestetically this is a wonderful movie. BuÃ±uel can just about do anything and it just makes perfect sense. He can make a coffin come tumbling through the desert by itself and we the audience buy it. He can be completely black and humourous and it all still remains relevant and quite emotionally. This sure must have been an inspiration for The Monthy Python crew when they did "Life of Brian". "Radioactive Flesh - the latest dance and the last".

I've only seen it once a while back and need to see it again to take in all the surrealism and critiques being made of religion and society.

Buñuel cuestiona el pensamiento religioso de una manera jocosa y cínica. Buenas actuaciones y la fotografía de Gabriel Figueroa se lleva las palmas junto al magnífico guión. Actúan Claudio Brook como Simón, Silvia Pinal, Enrique Álvarez Félix y Francisco Regueira.

I thought this was a good movie but obviously not as great as the critics think. I love his surrealism. This felt more like a parable and the thing about seeing Exterminating Angel and Belle De Jour right around this is that they feel like fully fleshed out film. I think I'd give this 5 stars for any other director and like Las Hurdes I think it is a brilliant distraction from his more complete visions.
