Arthouse appreciation will depend on a given viewer's tolerance for broad-strokes melodrama of intertwined fates that lacks the ambition and emotional complications of many similar screen works.

The classical music is soothing, the cinematography handsome and the acting strong, but the Swedish coming-of-age saga Simon and the Oaks is burdened with a sappy, soap-opera-ish script.

Peter Keough 08 Nov 2012

The German occupation barely makes an impression in Lisa Ohlin's sluggish adaptation of Marianne Fredriksson's novel.

Sometimes fantasy, or in this case, history, is the best place to live in this cruel world. Or is it?

Pity that a such a great book became so boring as a film. Very good performances by all the actors but still very boring....
