Shoah (1985)

Director Claude Lanzmann spent 11 years on this sprawling documentary about the Holocaust, conducting his own interviews and refusing to use a single frame of archival footage. Dividing Holocaust witnesses into three categories – survivors, bystanders, and perpetrators – Lanzmann presents testimonies from survivors of the Chelmno concentration camp, an Auschwitz escapee, and witnesses of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, as well as a chilling report of gas chambers from an SS officer at Treblinka.

An amazing documentary--even at 9 1/2 hours it felt short. That it took Lanzmann 5 years to edit the film is easily believable--the intricate construction is brilliant. (On those notes, I've read that Lanzmann released a film "Sobibor, October 14, 1943, 4 P.M." in 2001 that's an extended interview with one of his "Shoah" subjects. Unfortunately, the film doesn't seem to be available on DVD or VHS in the US.)

The film is undeniably tough going, but by looking into the hearts of the people that experienced the atrocities, it gets at the heart of the horror itself.

There is something about the Holocaust i cannot grasp. I've seen this film about 3 times without really understanding it. It's 9 1/2 hour length and the way it veers from story to story seemingly without reason didn't help. Then i read the book with the complete script and it hit me like a ton of bricks. It was a book i could only read very slowly, 2 or 3 pages at a time, because it was so devastating. Then i finally understood what Lanzmann accomplished. He put the Holocaust in your face and underneath your skin with this film.

Athough ten hours is very indead much of my life, it was absolutly worth it, A great experiance, with hundreds of stories that's tells us how it really was, both from jews and nazist. What I have seen, it hasn't been any feature-movies that can catch the real horror of holocaust, while Schindler's List is just a dance on roses. It would probably been to much, tough that Elem Klimov's Come and See was hell, it was a story that needed to be told, as so is the holocaust.

Viewing "Shoah" today proves that the Holocaust is not a discrete event, but rather an ongoing public narrative in which the movie continues to play a crucial part.
