Foreign, Chinese. A very good movie! Slow in parts, but very beautifully photographed. A look at a different time, in a different culture.

This film uses pauses and langor extremely well. A very slow moving but visually sumptuous story about a character resembling Du Yuesheng, his mistress and the country bumpkin who witnesses her undoing. Definitely not a gangster film, but worth watching for the visuals alone.

Unfortunately not Zhang Yimou at his best but definitely worth the time. A boy's coming of age. A spoiled night club singer. An evil mob boss and an island. Beautifully shot with lovely music and astonishing sets. Time worth spent.
