Oh Yeah...Outside Maestro Fellini's work, this has got to be absolutely one of the most enduring and greatest gemstone films of all Italian cinema. Deep, dark and harrowingly disturbing because of the subject and content matter, this is one strong political statement of survival, with a brilliant Oscar-nominated Best Actor performance by Giannini (up against Stallone in Rocky and De Niro in Taxi Driver). Surprisingly, they ALL unfairly lost that precious award. Director Wertmuller is definitely not to be trifled with - she deservedly was nominated as Academy Award Best Director (the FIRST woman ever to acheive this honour - Congratulations!).

Roger Ebert 22 Oct 2004

Its virtuoso style, demonstrating once again Miss Wertmuller's mastery of filmmaking, is used to tell us a story that's very opaque, despairing, and bottomless.

Giancarlo Giannini's a comical genius. Man, there are some harsh looking women in this movie, especially that warden. Poor Giancarlo.

Crazy, fantastic movie. No one can simultaneously be as despicable yet charismatic as Giannini.

One of my favorites of ALL time - the Grand Overture scene when Pasqualino finally sees and accepts the end of what was his reality - is an amazing piece of film and music. Plus - the fascist commandante - one of the best villians EVER
