Self Medicated (2005)

Based on true events. On the edges of Las Vegas, 17-year-old Andrew's life is spiraling out of control. Unable to cope with the loss of his father, Andrew's descent into drugs and violence is gaining momentum, and the once promising young man is now headed for self-destruction. Andrew's mother, helpless to control her son and fighting an addiction of her own, refuses to watch idly as her only child destroys himself. As a last resort, she hires a private company to forcibly kidnap and confine him in a locked-down and corrupt psychiatric hospital. As Andrew is subjected to the secret physical and emotional abuses of the program something inside him is re-awakened. He must somehow get free to save what's left of his life, but to do that, he knows he must first face his own demons head-on.

Self Medicated is that rare treat: a really good movie and, one hopes for Lapica, the start of something even bigger.

An impressive debut film for Monty Lapica , who takes on writing, directing, and acting lead. The film had some powerful dramatic scenes and great performances but there's this one plot device introduced in the middle of the film that I found a bit too cheesy.

My life parallels much of this movie and the emotional and cognitive nuances portrayed here are as real as life itself. This movie is very compelling, brilliantly written and directed with performances equal to the task.

Props for doing everything himself, that truly is an accomplishment, but the acting was mediocre and the storyline lacked anything that truly moved me.

I give this guy 100 percent credit for getting a film off of the ground. It's hard these days if you aren't some money powerhouse. Aside from that, I found the move to be completely forced, like some horrible after school special. It was predictable, very slow, and Lapica obviously glorified himself to stroke his ego (and did even more at the Q&A). He was very unbelievable as a 17 year old, and really the only good acting came from Diane Venora, Michael Bowen and Greg Germann. Yes, this movie was based on a true story, but the director himself admitted to fabricating parts of it to make it 'interesting.' But to me, it seemed like he added all of this extra stuff (the genius IQ, the MacGyver type escape, etc) to make him look more 'hard.' Not a very good movie to say the least.
