Self Medicated (2005)

Based on true events. On the edges of Las Vegas, 17-year-old Andrew's life is spiraling out of control. Unable to cope with the loss of his father, Andrew's descent into drugs and violence is gaining momentum, and the once promising young man is now headed for self-destruction. Andrew's mother, helpless to control her son and fighting an addiction of her own, refuses to watch idly as her only child destroys himself. As a last resort, she hires a private company to forcibly kidnap and confine him in a locked-down and corrupt psychiatric hospital. As Andrew is subjected to the secret physical and emotional abuses of the program something inside him is re-awakened. He must somehow get free to save what's left of his life, but to do that, he knows he must first face his own demons head-on.

Suffers from one serious flaw, the otherwise talented director's choice of himself to star in the picture. Now 24, he's simply a little long in the tooth to try to pass for a teenager.

A better choice for the lead role would have made this film a lot more watchable and more importantly, believable. Good story, but contained far too many scenes that could best be decribed as "dripping with cheese".

First-time writer-director-producer-actor is a fellow to watch. This debut film, which won 40 awards at festivals, is a trenchant, albeit tearjerking, look at a 17-year-old on the road to self-destruction.

This is the best movie of 2007 hands down. Anyone who has any sort of encounter with coping with loss will get something out of this film. It is truly brilliant.

I highly recommend this film. I have made it my personal mission to get as many people to see it as possible. It's that good, people. And Diane Venora is an amazing actress by anyone's standards.
